Introducing:

the Craigleith Community Working Group

The BMRA, in conjunction with Town Council and the Blue Mountain Village Association, has worked to initiate the Craigleith Community Working Group (CCWG). This group has been formed in recognition of the fact that Craigleith is experiencing rapid growth, and constitutes 40% of TBM's tax revenues. The intent is to identify opportunities to improve the quality of life of Craigleith residents.

Why did we form this group?

The purpose of the Craigleith Community Working Group (CCWG) is to address key issues in the Craigleith community, consider prioritizing solutions and bring to TBM Council specific recommendations for actions, tasks or initiatives in order to enhance the well-being of local residents.  The CCWG will be made up of municipal staff persons and several representatives of the Craigleith Community Improvement Team.

The TBM Council, through the endorsement of the Craigleith Community Working Group, acknowledges and recognizes our community's need for better communication on numerous subjects and, through this Working Group, will provide to Council and Staff the information, updates, and suggestions on subject matters specific to the Craigleith area. 

How we organized this

Step 1: We met with the Municipal Candidates

The first step in our effort to increase focus on Craigleith was to host a Craigleith specific question and answer with the municipal candidates in the 2022 municipal election.

The session, hosted in partnership with the Blue Mountain Village Association, was very well attended and served to highlight the need for more focus on Craigleith with a more structured plan for residents of Craigleith to communicate to Council.

Each candidate agreed that Craigleith represents a large segment of the Town's permanent residents and they committed to having more focus on Craigleith.

Step 2: Then we met with Council

The next step taken to increase council focus on Craigleith was the creation of a collaborative group we called the Craigleith Community Improvement Team.  The Team went before Council to request the creation of a formalized community working group with terms of reference that are specific to the Craigleith community's key needs.  Following several deputations and discussions with council and staff, a formal working group was established called the Craigleith Community Working Group (CCWG).  

What are we trying to do?

What are our priorities?

The Craigleith Community Working Group was established with initial terms of reference and priorities as general guidelines for Town staff to collaborate with the Craigleith Community Improvement team. 

These priorities will evolve but are outlined below:

• Establish a roadmap of potential actions and resource allocations

• Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the community's challenges and opportunities focusing on the following priorities;

  • Improvements to pedestrians safety and active transportation

  • Review the opportunities to develop and implement a four-season maintenance strategy for roads and trails

  • Effective planning and management of traffic and parking

  • Consider advancements in public transit and sustainable transportation options

  • Create strong community partnerships and consider potential funding opportunities through collaborative co-investment strategies for Council consideration

  • Review the Town’s Leisure Activities Plan and consider the potential expansion and connectivity of active transportation, parks, and recreational programming that foster community engagement

  • Promote conservation and enhancement of natural and cultural heritage through sustainability and asset management

  • Create recommendations that enhance and improve community engagement, collaboration and inclusivity

The Working Group will have its inaugural meeting July 14th and will subsequently meet on a predetermined schedule.  This Working Group will then present priorities and recommendations to the town for consideration on a frequent basis.
