Our Plans for the upcoming Municipal Election

As most TBM residents are very much aware, we face an October Municipal election with huge implications for the future of our town. We have seen a serious erosion of the town’s long term financial position, major struggles in delivering critical infrastructure projects on time and on budget, and almost no progress having been made in the creation of affordable housing, long term care and recreational facilities. Our Town also continues to be challenged in its relationship with Grey County, and the continued tax levy pressures that we are facing.

It is against this backdrop that we approach the coming election. We desperately need a Council that is capable of managing finances effectively, making tough decisions in a timely manner, and not changing course after key policy decisions have been made.

To assist our members through the process, the BMRA will be focused on a variety of election related activities. These include:

1 Voter Registration

We will share information related to voter qualification, and what sources members should access for guidance.

2 Identifying Primary Issues

We will engage our members in a dialogue related to which issues are of most importance to them. Those insights will be shared with the candidates, to ensure they are focused on those things that residents care about most deeply.

3 Candidate Evaluation

The capability sets that we require of the members of our next Council are as stated – financial acumen, decisiveness, pragmatism, and the ability to take a long term, full TBM view. We will engage with the candidates to understand who best fits the desired profile, and share that analysis with our members.

4 Candidate Sessions

The BMRA is currently involved with the planning of both Meet the Candidate sessions, and Candidate debates. We are currently working with other community stakeholders in developing these programs, and will share details as they are confirmed. It is projected that the sessions will commence in mid to late summer.

As part of the election planning, we would like to hear from our members. Please tell us what issues are of most importance to you – providing your top three concerns would be helpful. And we would also like to know what input you suggest current Council members would benefit from. What have you found to be positive in their performance, and what changes or different approaches do you believe would be beneficial.

We will summarize the feedback we receive, and use it to help inform candidate discussions and evaluation.
